Our analysis of past technical and particularly patent related translation problems led to the conclusion that inadequacies in technical translation generally resulted from one of two causes:
- the translator lacking adequate command of the subject area, or
- the translation process not including appropriate checking procedures to eliminate human error and ensure complete translation accuracy
PipersTranslations has overcome these problems by actively searching out the best specialist translation talent available and implementing proven quality control checking systems.
Over the years we have systematically built up an extensive database of experienced independent contracting translators with proven expertise. This enables us to allocate jobs to the most appropriately qualified translator available in that field. Whilst this may appear fundamental, it is not necessarily the case with smaller and broader based translation agencies which often lack the translator depth and technical expertise to consistently produce technical translations to professional standards. Although rare today, we will turn down a job if we are unsure our high professional standards will be met.
Every translator makes mistakes. Our experience is that most actual errors in translation are either what we could classify as simple "careless errors", or result from a misinterpretation of the meaning of the source text. The latter is not uncommon in patent specifications where complex terminology and grammatical structure can derail even the most experienced translator working from his second language into his mother tongue.
To overcome this problem PipersTranslations insists all its translations are checked by a second translator before despatch. The initial translator will naturally be a native speaker of the target language, the checker a native speaker of the source language. The checker will also draw the translator’s attention to any sections in the translation that may be a little unclear or where wording can be improved. This language cross-over has proven very effective in eliminating careless human error and translator misinterpretation of source language meaning.
